Environment and Land Based DiplomaThe Weardale Outdoor Centre assists Schools and Colleges in delivering the new Environment and Land Based Skills Diploma. The centre offers a variety of topics that will aid delivering the diploma including the opportunity for students to take work experience placements on the Estate. Just read below for the ways that the Estate can offer projects for the dipoma:Unit 1: Environmental influences upon ecosystems and Environment and Land Based Production enterprises: Research into the ecosystems of the following areas:- Aquatic, Pasture, Fell Land, Pine Woodland, Ancient Woodland, New Plantations, soil research. Unit 2: Working in the Environment and Land-based Sector: Industry Experience in Estate Management, Gamekeeping, Hill Farming, Drystone Walling. Research into the financial, legal and taxation of working in the countryside using the Estate as a case study. Unit 3: Plant Management and care: Feeding, growing, breeding, selecting, handling: The student could become actively involved in the management and care of the kitchen garden (larger new garden to be installed Spring 2010) Active involvement in the care of the new woodland coppices on the Estate including studies into species type and success rate. Unit 4: Animal Management and care: nutrition, growth, breeding and handling Research into the Estate’s hill sheep and beef farming. Research into the rearing of Pheasant’s and Partridge for shooting Deer management Vermin Control Unit 5: Plants and Animals: their role in society: Farm Research and stock production and meat entering the market for consumption Unit 6: The importance of a sustainable environment to society: Studies into the sustainability of Weardale as a base for tourism and agriculture and research into area of improvement. Studies into the impact of intensive development in Weardale on the natural environment. Unit 7: Monitoring the environment: A whole range of studies could be carried out (as per unit 1) in addition to monitoring weather patterns through wind and rain. Unit 8: Sources and uses of energy: Studies into the energy production of the Wind Turbine, Biomass Furnace and Solar Thermal Panels. |
